To assist it in its deliberations, City Council appoints Standing Committees to study issues and to make recommendations to Council. These Standing Committees are comprised solely of elected representatives. It is at the Standing Committee level that citizens can have input into the decision-making process.

Most decisions made by Standing Committees require final approval by City Council. City Council meets at 1:00 p.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of the month, except in July and August when it meets on the first Wednesday only. Council meetings are held in Victoria Hall in the Bytown Pavilion on the first level of City Hall, 111 Sussex Drive, K1N 5A1

- Office of the Chief Administrative Officer respecting items relating to Economic Development
- Department of Urban Planning and Public Works, the following branches or portions: the Licensing, Transportation and Buildings Branch with respect to the items relating to the Building Code Services Division; Planning Branch; and any housing issues that do not fall within the mandate of the City of Ottawa Non-Profit Housing Corporation.
- Site Plans, property standards loans, closing, altering, widening, diverting, selling etc. of highways
- Designation of lane(s) for use by bicycles
- All matters emanating from Advisory Committees, Boards, Authorities and Commissions within the responsibility of the Standing Committee, including appointment of members and appointments to BIA’s

The City of Ottawa invites the candidacy of residents interested in becoming a member of the Advisory Committees and City Boards listed in this section.
NOTE: Advisory Commitee meeting agendas are included in the links below.
Advisory Committee on French Language Services
* Provides advice on French language services. Meets at City Hall, 1st Thursday of the month, 6:00 p.m.
Advisory Committee on Equity & Diversity
* Works towards the creation, promotion and review of initiatives that contribute to the fuller participation of ethno-cultural and multi-racial groups. Meets at City Hall, 2nd Monday of the month, 6:00 p.m., additional subcommittee meetings.
Cultural Leadership Committee
* Advises the City on cultural planning and policy. Meets at City Hall, 2nd Monday of each month from 7:00 -9:00 pm.
Disability Issues Advisory Committee
* Recommends policy development on issues related to persons with disabilities. Meets at City Hall, 3rd Thursday of the month, 12:30 p.m.
Environmental Advisory Committee
* Advises on protection and enhancement of natural environment. Meets at City Hall, 4th Tuesday of the month, 5:00 p.m.
Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee
* Advises on all aspects of the City's Heritage Program. Meets at City Hall, 1st & 3rd Tuesday of the month, 6:00 p.m.
Taxi Advisory Committee
* Advises on all aspects of the taxi industry. Meets at City Hall, 1st Monday of the month, 5:30 p.m.
Ottawa Public Library Board
* Function: to operate a public library service in Ottawa Meets: 120 Metcalfe Street, 3rd Tuesday of the month, 7:30 p.m.
Pineview Municipal Golf Course - Board of Management
To set the policy and monitor the operation of the golf course. Meets at Pineview Municipal Golf Course as required, on Wednesdays, 12 noon.
Committee of Adjustment
Holds public hearings to consider applications for minor variances, consent and non-conforming uses of property under the zoning bylaw. Meets at City Hall, 1st & 3rd Thurs., 2:30 p.m.
Property Standards Committee/Court of Revision
Arbitrates disputes arising from Property Standards Inspection orders; hears appeals on Local Improvement and Pedestrian Promenade levies. Meets at City Hall, during the daytime as required.
Ottawa Hydro Electric Commission
Controls and manages all works for the distribution and supply of electric power. Meets at Ottawa Hydro Office, 4th Tuesday of month, 9:00 a.m.
Ottawa-Nepean Campsite Authority
Function: to adopt and administer policies, rules, construction, development and other regulations respecting the operation of the park. Meets at the call of the chair.
