REPORT RECOMMENDATION

 

That the Transportation Committee consider and recommend to Council, approval of Appendix B to the 2011-2014 City Strategic Plan.

Background

At its meeting of 1 May 2012, the Finance and Economic Development Committee will consider a report from the City Manager (ACS2012-CMR-OCM-0008) and the following recommendations:

 

That the Finance and Economic Development Committee:

 

1.         Approve Appendix A to this report; and

 

2.         Refer the report to the Transit Commission, Standing Committees and Council for their consideration and approval as follows:

 

·         Transportation Committee – Appendix B: 2 May 2012;

·         Environment Committee – Appendix C: 3 May 2012;

·         Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee – Appendix D: 10 May 2012;

·         Planning Committee – Appendix E: 8 May 2012;

·         Transit Commission – Appendix F: 16 May 2012;

·         Community and Protective Services Committee – Appendix G: 17 May 2012;

·         Council – Appendix H: 23 May 2012; and

 

3.         That Council consider and approve this report in its entirety following consideration by the Transit Commission and the various Standing Committees.

 

Accordingly, this report is before the Transportation Committee for review and discussion.

 

 

RURAL IMPLICATIONS

The rural implications of implementing the recommendations set out in this report are identified in the strategic initiatives outlined in the 2011-2014 City Strategic Plan.

TM4 - Promote alternative mobility choices

Promote alternative mobility choices by emphasizing transit, cycling and walking as preferred ways of getting around the City. Use education, promotion and incentives to encourage alternatives to driving, and provide information that encourages responsible travel.

TM4-A: Increase the percentage of population reached by the City's Transportation Demand Management website (TravelWise) and the Cycling in the City e-newsletter by 10%  (on a year-over-year basis).

Transportation Demand Management measures can offer many benefits including reducing traffic congestion, deferring the need for new infrastructure, reducing infrastructure costs, improving access and transportation options, improving air quality, and improving mental and physical health. Funds will be used to support ongoing educational and promotional efforts such as School Travel Planning, Bike to Work Month, Car Free Day, National Ride-Share Week, Travelwise, CAN-BIKE Cycling Education courses, among other initiatives.
