SUBJECT/OBJET        “IGNITING THE SPIRIT” FUNDRAISING EVENT FOR THE WABANO CENTRE FOR ABORIGINAL HEALTH

RECOMMENDATION

That the Ottawa Police Services Board approve funding for one half of a table at the Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health “Igniting the Spirit” gala being held on 18 June 2014 at the Hampton Inn Ottawa, at a cost of $1250.

BACKGROUND

The “Igniting the Spirit Gala, A Celebration of our Songs to the Universe”, is being held on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at the Hampton Inn Ottawa.  This event is a sit down dinner highlighting Aboriginal culture and entertainment.  All proceeds from this event will go towards creating a Centre of Excellence in Aboriginal Health Care that bridges traditional knowledge and culture with contemporary health care.  The Ottawa Police Executive Command will be supporting this event and has invited the Board to join them in purchasing a corporate table.  The price of a table for ten people is $2,500.

The Board’s Discretionary Fund Policy sets out four categories for priority funding, one of which is Community Relations through Involvement with Police-Related Organizations.  This category of funding is intended to enable the Board to purchase tickets or contribute donations to fundraising events.  The attendance and participation of Board members at fundraising events for organizations whose work supports the vision and mission of the Ottawa Police Service serves to demonstrate the Board’s support, goodwill and community involvement.

Should the Board approve this request, members will be canvassed to determine who wishes to attend the event.

FINANCIAL STATEMENT

Discretionary funds in the amount of $30,000 have been included in the Board’s 2014 draft budget.  Of this amount, $17,000 is pre-committed or earmarked:  $10,000 for the Street Ambassador Program; and $7,000 for the Police Associations’ scholarship funds.  The remaining $13,000 is available to meet all other requests and there are sufficient funds to cover this request.
