RECOMMENDATION

 

That the Ottawa Police Services Board approve the attendance of L.A. Smallwood at a two-day Symposium entitled “Economics of Policing: National Policing Research Symposium” being offered by Public Safety Canada on March 5 – 7, 2014 in Vancouver, British Columbia.

 

BACKGROUND

 

AnEconomics of Policing: National Policing Research Symposium” will be taking place at the Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue at Simon Fraser University (SFU), Vancouver, British Columbia on March 5-7, 2014.  It is being hosted by Public Safety Canada, with support from SFU and the Institute for Canadian Urban Research Studies (ICURS).  The Symposium is part of Public Safety Canada’s efforts to deliver on the three-pronged research plan outlined in the Shared Forward Agenda recently approved by Federal, Provincial and Territorial Ministers. 

 

Building from a study commissioned by Public Safety Canada entitled: Economics of Policing:  Baseline for Policing Research in Canada, the National Policing Symposium will:

 

The Canadian Association of Police Governance (CAPG) has been invited to send a certain number of representatives to this symposium, which will consist of structured working sessions and discussions for approximately 90 participants.  As Member Smallwood is a member of the CAPG Board of Directors, he has been invited to attend.

FINANCIAL STATEMENT

 

The estimated cost of attending the Symposium is approximately $1,800 per person.  There are sufficient funds in the Board’s budget to cover this request.
