SUBJECT/OBJET:

2013 OTTAWA POLICE GALA UPDATE

RECOMMENDATION

That the Ottawa Police Services Board receive this report for information.

BACKGROUND

On 19 October 2013, the fourth Annual Ottawa Police Gala was held at the Ottawa Convention Center with this year’s proceeds directed to the Christie Lake Kids (CLK).  After all invoices were paid, $105,000 was raised in support of CLK.

Christie Lake Kids creates opportunities for economically disadvantaged children and youth in Ottawa that changes the trajectory of their young lives through sport, arts, camp, mentoring and leadership programming that recognizes their needs, supports and challenges them.

Approximately 450 community members, partners, and business leaders joined together at the Ottawa Convention Centre in the Trillium Ballroom to celebrate the rich traditions and history of the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) and their valued community partnerships.

The OPS would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the event sponsors, with special thanks going to the three Platinum Sponsors - Telus, Adobe, and Valley Associates. Their ongoing commitment and leadership played a critical role in the success of this year’s event.

The OPS plans to host the fifth annual Ottawa Police Gala at the Ottawa Convention Centre on 25 October 2014.

CONSULTATION

Beginning in early December, the Ottawa Police Service will be accepting applications from organizations who wish to be the designated charity for next year’s Gala. The applications are received through Charity Village and scored by a committee that includes the Platinum sponsors. The final decision on which organizations will receive the support is made by the Ottawa Police Service.

FINANCIAL STATEMENT

The presentation of the proceeds from the 2013 Ottawa Police Gala to the CLK will take place at the Police Services Board meeting on 25 November 2013.

CONCLUSION

The 2013 Ottawa Police Service Gala has been a success once again and has brought our members and the community together to enjoy a ceremony of policing traditions.  The performance of the Ottawa Police Pipes and Drums, the Ceremonial Guard, and the Chorus, together with involvement of many Venturers, Youth Advisory Committee members, and Auxiliary volunteers, added to the success of the event.  We are delighted to announce that, after all the outstanding invoices are paid, a donation of $105,000 will be made to CLK.  Since its debut in 2010, the Gala has raised $372,000 for local charities.
