REPORT RAPPORT |
DATE 22 July 2013
TO/DEST. Chair and Members of the Ottawa Police Services Board
FROM/EXP. Executive Director, Ottawa Police Services Board
SUBJECT/OBJET OTTAWA POLICE GALA - FUNDRAISER IN SUPPORT OF
CHRISTIE LAKE KIDS
RECOMMENDATION
That the Ottawa Police Services Board approve the purchase of a table at the Fourth Annual Ottawa Police Gala being held on October 19, 2013 at the Ottawa Convention Centre, at a cost of $1,750.
BACKGROUND
The Fourth Annual Ottawa Police Gala is being held at the Ottawa Convention Centre on October 19, 2013. The evening will include dinner, dancing, a live band, a silent auction and a raffle. The cost of a table for 10 people is $1,750.
The OPS Gala Committee raises funds for local charities making an impact for those facing extraordinary challenges. Funds raised in the inaugural Gala in 2010 supported drug and alcohol addiction treatment programs for Ottawa area youth. That year, the OPS Gala contributed $50,000.00 to Project S.T.E.P. through sponsorship, donations and ticket sales. The beneficiary of the second Gala in 2011 was the Ottawa Mission, dedicated to helping the area’s homeless. Through the generous contributions of sponsors and community members, $90,000.00 was raised to support their programming. In 2012, $127,000 was raised and donated to the Ottawa Youth Services Bureau.
This year funds are being raised for Christie Lake Kids. Since 1922, Christie Lake Kids has been responding to the specific needs of economically disadvantaged children age 6-17 from the Ottawa area.
BOARD POLICY
The Board’s Discretionary Fund Policy sets out four categories for priority funding, one of which is Community Relations through Involvement with Police-Related Organizations. This category of funding is intended to enable the Board to purchase tickets or contribute donations to fundraising events. The attendance and participation of Board members at fundraising events for organizations whose work supports the vision and mission of the Ottawa Police Service serves to demonstrate the Board’s support, goodwill and community involvement.
The Ottawa Police Gala in support of Christie Lake Kids meets the policy criteria, and is a very worthwhile community partner for the Police Services Board to support.
