RAPPORT

TO/DEST.

Chair and Members, Ottawa Police Services Board

FROM/EXP.

Executive Director, Ottawa Police Services Board

SUBJECT/OBJET

NATIONAL CAPITAL AREA CRIME STOPPERS 2ND ANNUAL FUNDRAISING GALA

RECOMMENDATION

That the Ottawa Police Services Board approve funding for one half of a table at the National Capital Area Crime Stoppers 2nd Annual Fundraising Gala being held on 30 May 2013 at the Ottawa Convention Centre, at a cost of $600.

BACKGROUND

Crime Stoppers is a registered non-profit organization run by community volunteers with a mission to support local police services in solving crimes. It does so by offering rewards to callers who provide information anonymously regarding a crime.  Community awareness and engagement are its two main priorities.

Crime Stoppers relies solely upon the support, donations and contributions of individuals and businesses in the community to keep its program functional.  In a continuing effort to raise funds, as well as create awareness of its program, National Capital Area Crime Stoppers will be hosting a fundraising dinner with special guests from the community.  More information about the event is contained in the notice attached as Annex A.

The Police Service will be supporting this event and has invited the Board to join them in purchasing a table.  The price of a table for ten people is $1,200, so the Board’s share would be $600.

The Board’s Discretionary Fund Policy sets out four categories for priority funding, one of which is Community Relations through Involvement with Police-Related Organizations.  This category of funding is intended to enable the Board to purchase tickets or contribute donations to fundraising events.  The attendance and participation of Board members at fundraising events for organizations whose work supports the vision and mission of the Ottawa Police Service serves to demonstrate the Board’s support, goodwill and community involvement.

Should the Board approve this request, members will be canvassed to determine who wishes to attend the event.

FINANCIAL STATEMENT

Discretionary funds in the amount of $30,000 have been included in the Board’s 2013 budget.  Of this amount, $17,000 is pre-committed or earmarked:  $10,000 for the Street Ambassador Program; and $7,000 for the Police Associations’ scholarship funds.  The remaining $13,000 is available to meet all other requests.  At the present time there is $11,350 remaining to meet this and other requests for the year.
