RAPPORT

DATE

TO/DEST.

Chair and Members, Ottawa Police Services Board

FROM/EXP.

Executive Director, Ottawa Police Services Board

SUBJECT/OBJET

ROYAL OTTAWA FOUNDATION FOR MENTAL HEALTH
 INSPIRATION AWARDS GALA

RECOMMENDATION

That the Ottawa Police Services Board approve funding for one half of a table at the Royal Ottawa Foundation’s Inspiration Awards Gala being held on        1 March 2013 at the Delta Ottawa City Centre, at a cost of $1,550.

BACKGROUND

For the past several years, the Royal Ottawa Foundation for Mental Health has held an Inspiration Awards Gala to thank sponsors, donors and attendees who have contributed to the raising of much needed funds in support of mental health care and research.  It also celebrates outstanding individuals who have triumphed over their own experiences with mental illness.  The next Gala will be held on 1 March 2013 at the Delta Ottawa City Centre.

The Annual Gala has become Eastern Ontario’s premier fundraising event for mental health, attracting close to 600 leaders from the business, political, public and not-for-profit communities.  In its ninth year, the event is an opportunity to celebrate the tremendous achievements of people who have served as models of hope and inspiration in their efforts to overcome mental illness and who have made positive contributions to the mental health field.

The Police Service will be supporting this event again in 2013 and has invited the Board to join them in purchasing a corporate table.  The price of a table for eight people is $3,100, so the Board’s share would be $1,550.  Purchase of a corporate table includes having the names of the Police Service and Police Services Board appear in the event program and on the table signage.

The Board’s Discretionary Fund Policy sets out four categories for priority funding, one of which is Community Relations through Involvement with Police-Related Organizations.  This category of funding is intended to enable the Board to purchase tickets or contribute donations to fundraising events.  The attendance and participation of Board members at fundraising events for organizations whose work supports the vision and mission of the Ottawa Police Service serves to demonstrate the Board’s support, goodwill and community involvement.

Should the Board approve this request, members will be canvassed to determine who wishes to attend the event.

FINANCIAL STATEMENT

This event is taking place in 2013.  Discretionary funds in the amount of $30,000 are included in the Board’s 2013 budget, $17,000 of which is earmarked for specific contributions, leaving $13,000 for other requests such as this one.  The total of this request is $1,550.
