REPORT RAPPORT |
DATE 22 October 2012
TO/DEST. Chair and Members of the Ottawa Police Services Board
FROM/EXP. Executive Director, Ottawa Police Services Board
SUBJECT/OBJET CHRISTIE LAKE KIDS FUNDRAISER
RECOMMENDATION
That the Ottawa Police Services Board approve funding for one half of a table at the Christie Lake Kids Fundraiser being held on 1 November 2012 at the National Arts Centre, at a cost of $750.
BACKGROUND
The Christie Lake Kids’ inaugural fundraising gala is being held at the National Arts Centre on November 1, 2012. The evening will include exceptional food and wine presented by Chef Michael Blackie, an interactive presentation with Chef Blackie as well as silent and live auctions. The cost of a table for 10 people is $1,500. Chief Bordeleau has invited the Board to share a table at this event in support of a key community partner.
Christie Lake Kids’ mission is to enrich the lives and prospects of economically disadvantaged children, by providing year-round recreational programming to develop physical, artistic and social skills. The program strengthens the mental health and well-being of at-risk children and youth. Through the camp and STAR programs, children and youth gain social skills including problem-solving, conflict resolution and self control.
BOARD POLICY
The Board’s Discretionary Fund Policy sets out four categories for priority funding, one of which is Community Relations through Involvement with Police-Related Organizations. This category of funding is intended to enable the Board to purchase tickets or contribute donations to fundraising events. The attendance and participation of Board members at fundraising events for organizations whose work supports the vision and mission of the Ottawa Police Service serves to demonstrate the Board’s support, goodwill and community involvement.
The Christie Lakes Kids fundraising gala meets the policy criteria, and is a very worthwhile community partner for the Police Services Board to support.
CONSULTATION
Not applicable.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT
Discretionary funds in the amount of $30,000 were included in the Board’s 2012 budget. Of this amount, $17,000 is pre-committed or earmarked - $10,000 for the Street Ambassador Program and $7,000 for the Police Association scholarship fund, leaving $13,000 for all other requests. There are insufficient funds remaining in this account to meet this request, but there are funds remaining in other accounts within the Board budget to cover this expenditure should the Board wish to approve it.
