Director, Ottawa Police Services Board
SUBJECT/OBJET OTTAWA POLICE GALA - FUNDRAISER IN SUPPORT OF
THE
YOUTH SERVICES BUREAU
RECOMMENDATION
That the Ottawa Police Services Board approve
the purchase of a table at the Third Annual Ottawa Police Gala being held on October
20, 2012 at the Ottawa Convention Centre, at a cost of $1,500.
BACKGROUND
The Third Annual Ottawa Police Gala is being
held at the Ottawa Convention Centre on October 20, 2012. The evening will include dinner, dancing, a live
band, a silent auction and a raffle. Captivating motivational speaker Frank
O'Dea will be the featured guest speaker.
The cost of a table for 10 people is $1,500.
The OPS Gala
Committee raises funds for charities making an impact for those facing
extraordinary challenges. Funds raised
in the inaugural Gala in 2010 supported drug and alcohol addiction treatment
programs for Ottawa area youth. That
year, the OPS Gala contributed $50,000.00 to Project S.T.E.P. through
sponsorship, donations and ticket sales. The beneficiary of the second Gala in
2011 was the Ottawa Mission, dedicated to helping the area’s homeless. Through the generous contributions of
sponsors and community members, $90,000.00 was raised to support their
programming.
This year’s
charity is the Youth Services Bureau (YSB).
Founded in 1960, the YSB is one of the largest
and most comprehensive non‑profit agencies serving youth in this
community. Over 350 caring professionals
work from 20 locations across the city to deliver a vast range of programs and
services that support at-risk youth and their families. The Gala Committee and the YSB are
working toward securing sponsorship and donations for the YSB to increase the
availability of mental health intervention for high risk youth in Ottawa.
BOARD POLICY
The Board’s
Discretionary Fund Policy sets out four categories for priority funding, one of
which is Community Relations through Involvement with Police-Related
Organizations. This category of funding
is intended to enable the Board to purchase tickets or contribute donations to
fundraising events. The attendance and
participation of Board members at fundraising events for organizations whose
work supports the vision and mission of the Ottawa Police Service serves to
demonstrate the Board’s support, goodwill and community involvement.
The Ottawa
Police Gala in support of the Ottawa Mission meets the policy criteria, and is
a very worthwhile community partner for the Police Services Board to
support.

FINANCIAL
STATEMENT
Discretionary
funds in the amount of $30,000 have been included in the Board’s 2012
budget. Of this amount, $17,000 is
pre-committed or earmarked - $10,000 for the Street Ambassador Program and
$7,000 for the Police Association scholarship fund - leaving $13,000 for all
other requests. There are sufficient
funds remaining in the budget to meet this request but it will deplete the fund
for the year.
