NEW APPOINTMENT OF SPECIAL CONSTABLE – OC TRANSPO

RECOMMENDATION
To ensure that this employee can carry out her assigned duties as a Special Constable, application is made to the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services to have her appointed as a Special Constable pursuant to Section 53 of the Police Services Act. The Police Services Board appoints the employee as a Special Constable upon approval by the Ministry. The appointment is valid until 14 November 2016 or until the appointee is no longer in the employ of OC Transpo (though the appointment can be renewed). Upon termination of her employment, the Ottawa Police Service advises the Ministry to terminate the appointment.
DISCUSSION
The Board is asked to appoint the employee cited above as a Special Constable in accordance with the above-noted process. The employee has been hired by OC Transpo in anticipation of being appointed to the Special Constable position, subject to Board and Ministry approval. She will be performing the responsibilities cited in the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ottawa Police Services Board and City of Ottawa Transit Services approved by the Board in December 2006.
Approval has been obtained from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services to have her appointed as a Special Constable. Pursuant to Section 53 of the Police Services Act, upon receipt of the Board appointment of her status, the employee will be required to undertake the Oath of Office administered by the Chief of Police or his delegate.

Special Constable status is required in order for employees working with OC Transpo to undertake the full duties and responsibilities assigned to them.
