TO/DEST.                        Members of the Ottawa Police Services Board

FROM/EXP.                    Executive Director, Ottawa Police Services Board

SUBJECT/OBJET           ATTENDANCE AT ONTARIO ASSOCIATION OF

                                         POLICE SERVICES BOARDS ANNUAL CONFERENCE

RECOMMENDATION

That the Ottawa Police Services Board approve the attendance of E. El-Chantiry, H. Jensen and W. Fedec at the Annual Conference of the Ontario Association of Police Services Boards, to be held May 11 – 14, 2011 in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

BACKGROUND

All members of the Board received the information attached at Annex A about the Ontario Association of Police Services Boards’ (OAPSB) 49th Annual Conference to be held in Niagara Falls, 11 - 14 May 2011, and were canvassed as to their interest in attending.

The Ottawa Police Services Board has recognized the importance of ongoing training and education for its members through its policies and in particular through the training policy adopted in 2006 in response to a recommendation from the City’s Auditor General.  The Board also ensures that sufficient funds are included in its budget each year to support its commitment to ongoing education and enable Board members to attend various learning opportunities throughout the year.  This conference is one of two annual conferences specifically designed for members of police boards.  It is particularly important that the Ottawa Police Services Board be well represented at this year’s OAPSB conference because we are hosting the 50th anniversary conference next year and will be sponsoring a breakfast this year to encourage attendance in 2012.

The Police Services Board is asked to approve attendance at the 2011 OAPSB conference for Chair El-Chantiry, Member Jensen and Executive Director Fedec.

CONSULTATION

Consultation was not applicable.

FINANCIAL STATEMENT

The cost of attending this conference is estimated at $2,150 per person.  There are sufficient funds in the draft 2011 Police Services Board budget to accommodate this request.
