REPORT RECOMMENDATION

 

That City Council reaffirm its commitment to municipal cultural planning, and to Phase Two of the City of Ottawa’s cultural mapping initiative (Cultural Value Geographic Information System). 

 

 

RECOMMANDATION DU RAPPORT

 

Que le Conseil municipal confirme son engagement envers la planification culturelle de la Ville et la phase deux du projet de carte culturelle (Système d’information géographique sur la valeur de la culture) de la Ville d’Ottawa.

 

 

BACKGROUND

 

The Community and Protective Services Committee, at its meeting of 19 January 2012, approved the following motion added to the agenda pursuant to 84.(3) of the Procedure By-law (being By-law no. 2006-462).

 

WHEREAS the Province of Ontario, Ministry of Tourism and Culture provides financial assistance (50% of total eligible project costs, to a maximum of $100,000) to municipalities for cultural planning projects through the Creative Communities Prosperity Fund; and

 

WHEREAS the City of Ottawa applied to, received and reported on financial assistance from this Fund (2009-2011) for its Arts and Heritage Plan Renewal Process, including Phase One of a cultural mapping initiative; and

 

WHEREAS the City of Ottawa submitted a second, subsequent application to the Creative Communities Prosperity Fund on June 6, 2011 and was funded for Phase Two of its cultural mapping initiative (Cultural Value Geographic Information System); and

 

WHEREAS the objective of the City of Ottawa’s Cultural Value Geographic Information System (CV-GIS) is to create a dynamic online service that both identifies cultural events, venues, industries and people; and visually represents the value of these cultural assets;

 

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that City Council reaffirm its commitment to municipal cultural planning, and to Phase Two of the City of Ottawa’s cultural mapping initiative (Cultural Value Geographic Information System). 

 

 

CONSULTATION

 

City Operations

 

Cultural Services has worked collaboratively with the local cultural sector throughout the Arts and Heritage Plan Renewal process.   The first phase of the cultural mapping initiative was seeded during this renewal, and the second phase (Cultural Value Geographic Information System) continues to develop in collaboration with the community.

 

 

FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS

 

There are no financial implications from this recommendation.

 

 

DISPOSITION

 

That the City Clerk’s office correspond to the Province of Ontario, Ministry of Tourism and Culture to reaffirm its commitment to municipal cultural planning, and to Phase Two of the City of Ottawa’s cultural mapping initiative (Cultural Value Geographic Information System).
