BACKGROUND

Pursuant to Section 77 (12) of the Procedure By-law, Councillor Holmes requested that the following motion be placed on the Planning and Environment Committee Agenda:

Whereas the Rideau Canal is a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site, a National Historic Site and a Canadian Heritage River that runs through the City of Ottawa;

Whereas Parks Canada, the owner and steward of the Rideau Canal was advised by UNESCO at the time of inscription on the World Heritage List to undertake a study “to identify the visual setting of the canal along its length;”

Whereas Parks Canada will undertake the study and the results of the study, when completed, will be of use to decision makers, property owners and stakeholders who live, work and play along the Canal;

Whereas Parks Canada is not soliciting funds from municipal governments but rather is seeking the support in principle of the “The Rideau Landscape Corridor Strategy” as it will provide for the wise management of this world heritage site;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that Planning and Environment Committee and Council support in principle the concept of the  “Rideau Canal Corridor Landscape Strategy” and direct staff to stay informed about this work.
