REPORT RECOMMENDATION
That the Corporate Services
and Economic Development Committee recommend Council approve the appointment of
Ken Yip to the Somerset Street Chinatown Business Improvement Area Board of
Management for the term expiring November 30, 2010.

au Conseil municipal d’approuver la nomination de Ken Yip au Conseil de gestion
de la Zone d’amélioration commerciale de Somerset Street Chinatown pour un
mandat prenant fin le 30 novembre 2010.
Section 204 of the Municipal Act,
2001 requires that the municipality appoint Business Improvement Area (BIA)
Board members.
According to its by-law (By-law No.
305-94), the Somerset Street Chinatown Business Improvement Area is entitled to
“twelve (12) members, at least one of whom shall be a member of Council”.
At its 14 December 2006 meeting,
City Council appointed Councillor Diane Holmes as its representative on the
Somerset Street Chinatown Business Improvement Area Board of Management and at
its 23 May 2007 meeting, City Council approved the appointment of eleven (11)
business members to the Somerset Street Chinatown BIA.
In a letter dated 14 April 2008, the Somerset Street Chinatown BIA asked
that Council appoint Mr. Ken Yip on the Somerset Street Chinatown BIA Board of Management. In a follow-up e-mail dated 1 May 2008, the
BIA confirmed that Mr. Yip’s appointment was the result of the resignation of
Mr. Daniel Kwan.
Mr. Yip will serve the balance of the term, expiring on November 30,
2010.
Consultation or recruitment of
members is undertaken by the BIA. This
is an administrative matter completed on behalf of the BIA, therefore public
consultation is not required.
There are no financial implications
related to this report.

Upon approval of the report by
Council, the office of the City Clerk will notify the Somerset Street Chinatown
BIA of the appointment.
