That
the Corporate Services and Economic Development Committee recommend Council
approve Councillor Georges Bédard continue as the City of Ottawa representative
on the Canadian Capital Cities Organization Board of Directors.
Que le Comité des
services organisationnels et du développement économique recommande au Conseil
d’approuver la nomination du conseiller Georges Bédard comme représentant de la
Ville d’Ottawa au sein du conseil d’administration de l’Organisation des
capitales canadiennes.
The Canadian Capital Cities Organization (CCCO) is composed of representatives from Canada's provincial and territorial capitals, as well as from the national capital.
Formed in 1994, the CCCO provides
all of the capital cities across Canada with a means to link with one another
in order to share ideas, common concerns as well as to promote Canadian ideals,
history and pride. The CCCO seeks to promote a greater knowledge of Canada's
heritage, culture and political development by encouraging the exploration of
those cities that have become Canada's capitals.
The CCCO includes participants from the federal, provincial, territorial and municipal sectors and the private sector.
The CCCO constitutes an important network for sharing experiences and best practices on important capital city issues and a venue for promoting activities and initiatives in areas of common interest.
According to the CCCO’s By-law, representation on its Board of Directors shall be comprised of a minimum of three (3) and a maximum of fifteen (15) directors. The current board membership includes municipal Councillors and Mayors.
Councillor Georges Bédard is currently Ottawa’s representative at the CCCO. He has served on the Board of Directors since 2005, and is being recommended for re-appointment.
No public consultation was required.
The Board of Directors meets six times a year as follows: once in Ottawa; four teleconference Board meetings; and once in conjunction with the CCCO Annual General Meeting and Conference, (Victoria, BC, June 25-28, 2008). Costs to participate in the four teleconference meetings are covered by the CCCO. All other costs to attend Board of Directors meetings, including those costs directly related to the annual general meeting and conference, are the responsibility of the Board member.
These additional costs are estimated to be approximately $1,950 per year, and the annual membership fee is $250 per year, for a total of $2,200 per year. The required funds were anticipated within the Elected Official Administration operating budget.
Following Council approval of the appointment of Councillor Georges Bédard as the City of Ottawa representative on the Canadian Capital Cities Organization Board, the City Clerk’s staff will advise CCCO.
