BACKGROUND

On 17 May 2007, Councillor Holmes put forward the following Motion:

WHEREAS July 1, 2007 marks the 80th Anniversary of the dedication of the Peace Tower and its Carillon;

AND WHEREAS the year 2007 is also being commemorated as a date of significance to the City of Ottawa - as the 175th Anniversary of the opening of the Rideau Canal, and the 150th Anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Victoria’s selection of the City of Ottawa as the permanent Capital of the United Provinces of Canada, subsequently the Dominion of Canada;

AND WHEREAS a civic bell tower and 8-voice chard of bells was a key feature in the design of the new Ottawa City Hall (the former Headquarters of the Regional-Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton) – with great attention being given to the tuning, location, and chime of the bells which were cast for this purpose by the renowned John Taylor Bellfounders of Loughborough, England for the sum of $250,000.00;

AND that it was the intention of the architect of this building that these bells chime in a municipal dialogue with those of the seat of national government; and as a gesture of urbanity to city surrounding;

AND that these bells represent a precious City asset which currently hangs silent and disused;

BE IT RESOLVED that on July 1, 2007 the City of Ottawa re-dedicate its City Hall bell tower in celebration of these significant anniversaries, and that these bells resume their chiming with the exception of Sundays and to cease temporarily when requested by community groups.
