REPORT RECOMMENDATION

That the Corporate Services and Economic Development Committee recommend Council approve the appointment of Philip Yip to the Somerset Street Chinatown Business Improvement Area Board of Management for the term expiring November 30, 2006.

Que le Comité des services organisationnels et du développement économique recommande au Conseil municipal d’approuver la nomination de Philip Yip au conseil de gestion de la Zone d’amélioration commerciale de Somerset Street Chinatown pour un mandat prenant fin le 30 novembre 2006.

DISCUSSION

Section 204 of the Municipal Act, 2001 requires that the municipality appoint Business Improvement Area (BIA) Board members.

At its 11 February 2004 meeting, City Council approved the appointment of members to the Somerset Street Chinatown BIA (formerly the Somerset Heights BIA). In a letter dated January 24, 2005, the BIA advised the City of the resignations of David Gibson and Pierre Mondoux from its Board of Management and in June 2005, the BIA requested the appointment of Lucinda Boyd to fill one of those vacancies.

In a letter dated January 16, 2006, the BIA has requested the appointment of Mr. Philip Yip, Owner of Kowloon Market at 712 Somerset Street West, to fill the second position on its Board of Management left vacant when Mr. Gibson and Mr. Mondoux resigned in January 2005.

Mr. Yip will serve the balance of the term, expiring on November 30, 2006.

CONSULTATION

Consultation or recruitment of members is undertaken by the BIA. This is an administrative matter completed on behalf of the BIA, therefore public consultation is not required.

FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS

There are no financial implications related to this report.

DISPOSITION

Upon approval of the report by Council, the City Clerk will notify the Somerset Street Chinatown BIA of the appointment.
