POLICY STATEMENT

Accumulated sick leave entitlements will be paid in accordance with Collective Agreements or relevant Terms and Conditions of Employment and will not exceed the maximum established in the Municipal Act.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this policy is to define how the payment of accumulated sick leave banks will be paid in compliance with both the limitations defined in the Municipal Act and the sick leave policy within each former municipality.

Application

This policy applies to all Management, Professional and Exempt employees and unionized employees hired prior to the inception of income protection plan and who have maintained an accumulated sick leave bank.

Policy Description

This policy allows the City of Ottawa to pay employees their accumulated sick leave bank based on their respective Collective Agreements or Terms and Conditions of Employment. 

 

Payment will be based on the employee’s departure date and reason for termination.  Employees will have the option the take payment as a lump sum as a pre-retirement leave or a combination of both up to a maximum of 130 days.  The method of payment will vary based on where the employee was employed prior to amalgamation and is detailed in Appendix A.

 

Employees electing pre-retirement leave will not be eligible for the Income Protection Plan and Long Term Disability benefits.  The existing cost sharing arrangement for insured benefits (extended health, dental, life insurances), pension plan and statutory deductions will remain.

 

 

 

 

DEFINITIONS:

Accumulated Sick Leave – are sick leave days accumulated prior to the inception of income protection plan, particular dates are stated in the respective Collective Agreements and Terms and Conditions of Employment.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Compensation, Payroll and Benefits Branch

·      Paying the remaining accumulated sick leave banks based on the employee’s respective Collective Agreement or Terms and Conditions of Employment.
