Background
The Ontario Public Health Standards
require Ottawa Public Health (OPH) to ensure that the Board of Health is aware
of and uses epidemiological data to inform the development of healthy public
policy, programs and services. The Ontario Public Health Organizational Standards
mandate OPH to disseminate the results of population health assessments to its
communities. In June 2011, the reporting schedule of epidemiological reports to
the Board was approved (ACS2011-OPH-IQS-0002) which stated that the Healthy
Eating, Active Living and Healthy Weights in Ottawa, 2012 report would be presented to the
Board in 2012.
The purpose of this report is to provide the
Board with the Healthy Eating, Active Living and Healthy Weights in Ottawa,
2012 report.
DISCUSSION
Healthy eating, Active
Living and Healthy Weights in Ottawa, 2012
The Healthy Eating,
Active Living and Healthy Weights in Ottawa, 2012 report is an epidemiological overview
of three of the five major risk factors associated with chronic diseases:
healthy eating; physical activity and healthy weights.
The Healthy Eating, Active Living and Healthy Weights, 2012 report acknowledges
that obesity is a complex health outcome with multifaceted and far-reaching
causes and contributors. A variety of
factors can influence energy balance and contribute to the development of
obesity. These factors can include
individual choices (i.e. calories eaten and calories expended), but also
components of the built and social environments that have the capacity to
impact the health behaviours of individuals. The settings in which we live, learn, work,
and play can influence the choices we make including the food we consume and
how active we are. As such, the report provides
data analyses on the prevalence, determinants and impacts of food consumption,
physical activity, and overweight and obesity in the City of Ottawa and where
possible, discusses patterns over time and compared to the rest of Ontario.
OPH
works with partners and the community to help reduce Ottawa residents’ risk
factors that are associated with chronic diseases. OPH promotes healthy
lifestyles such as healthy eating, regular physical activity, and achieving a
healthy weight.
OPH will inform health care providers and
community partners of pertinent
local epidemiological information.
