Doors Open celebrates historically and architecturally significant buildings and facilitates people’s understanding and enjoyment of their local architectural environment. It generates a greater awareness of Ottawa’s built heritage for its citizens and tourists alike.

Linda Russell has been involved with Doors Open Ottawa since its inception in 2002. She was instrumental in bringing home the idea and promoting its acceptance, making Ottawa the second city in North America to host a Doors Open event. Persuaded that this was a wonderful opportunity for generating community pride and of the potential of this event, Linda initiated the development of the infrastructure which culminated in the first Doors Open Ottawa event being held in May 2002.

It is through the dedication and contributions of volunteers like Linda Russell that our city’s built heritage was brought to light for many visitors – residents and tourists – and that the event has been able to thrive and provide a peek inside many doors in Ottawa for its 11th year in 2012.

Linda’s commitment to volunteerism and Doors Open Ottawa has helped the community realize how rich it is with its built heritage and how important it is to also show it off. Last year, the event boasted 110 volunteers for some thirty buildings requesting the city’s support in the recruitment of volunteers for their building. Many of them return to volunteer year after year and wouldn’t dream of missing the occasion.
